meet Cameron John

WAHOOOO!!!!

i wasn't exactly expecting to write this post for another two weeks, but God had different plans. yesterday afternoon my sister was rushed to the hospital and gave birth to her second little baby boy less than two hours later!

isn't he just gorgeous? and check it out, he has a head full of dark hair!

i'm so proud of my sister. since Cameron decided to come so fast, the plan of having an epidural was tossed out the window. but Amber went with it and had that sweet little babe au naturale.

carter got a little bored in the waiting room. but once we turned on some cartoon's and gave him a couple dinosaurs, he was content. and of course, i had to bring Cameron a birth day cake.

why is being in children's ministry important to me?

this was a question posed to me and a group of others last night. and for some reason, i panicked.

i'm in children's ministry?!?! (it was like i hadn't realized it.) how did this happen?! i don't know how to minister to anyone, especially kids, who can ask all kinds of scary questions.

let me back up a bit. KJB and i were invited to a children's department pep rally/dinner at church. i figured because we volunteer in the nursery and help run the basketball league they felt obligated to invite us.

there were 13 others, including sunday school teachers, VBS leaders, and children's church teachers. it seemed intimate. we had dinner and our awesome children's department leader started talking to us about God calling her to step things up in our childrens' ministry.

it was around this time that she asked us that question up there. and at that moment, after that strand of thoughts ran through my head, i realized our importance to this group. the basketball league brings in around 120 kids each year, 95% of those are not church members. and as leaders of this league, we are the first impression of our church to these kids and parents.

YIKES.

talk about a wake up call. i'm serving God in a ministry and i never realized how important it is to our church. of course, i realized it's important to God, because i want these kids to know Him and call him a friend. but it would be awesome if these kids would be able to call our church "home".

the pep rally was motivational and inspiring. it's awesome to hear people passionate about Christ share their love and vision.

and it really got me thinking on that question.

so, to friends in children's ministry, why is being in this ministry important to you?

cocktails & crafts

this weekend, along side my dear friend mackenzie, we hosted a cocktails and crafts party! i was inspired by this mini-series on Pure & Simple so i asked kenz to help me. together we chose a craft we thought would be fairly simple- coasters!- and she whipped up an adorbs e-vite. to keep it easy for everyone, i purchased all the coasters, paint, brushes, etc. and everyone gave me a couple bucks at the party.

mackenzie made a delicious martini with vodka, triple sec, and cranberry juice. we had some yummy veggies and dips but i just can't handle a party without a sweet treat. so i brought a mini frozen yogurt bar.

it was fun to see what everyone came up with. we saw a lot of these four things ^ and it was nice to do something a little different. we decided to do another craft night again soon, but we will rotate houses.

special thanks to Mackenzie for hosting with me and to Megan for sending me the photos she took.

being content

God is teaching me a lesson on being content. He proved that to me when i opened up my bible yesterday to  Galatians 6:4-5.

it says "Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load."

"Why are you comparing yourself to someone else?" He asked. and i knew immediately what he meant.

if there's one thing in this world that i want right now, it's a house. a house that is ours that we can settle into and make our own. something we fix up and turn into a home.

our apartment is nice but it's not a house. each time another friend posts a picture of themselves on facebook outside of a gorgeous house holding a sold side, i fill up with a little more jealousy. a horrid jealousy that eats at my soul.

coveting is not becoming on me. it wears on my heart for hours, making me cranky and bitter.

why am i not living in this season? it was a duh, hit-myself-on-the-forehead, moment. this is where God wants me right now! in this small apartment, that someone else maintains (for the most part), so that i can share His ministry with 120 children. because if i were spending my time, money, and energy on purchasing and fixing up a house, i couldn't be serving Him in this outreach program.

God has given me all i need. and i trust that He always will.

ikea nightstand - 2 ways

i think about ikea a lot. it could be that i'm fascinated with it because it's so far away and between trips i have withdrawal. their furniture may not be the best quality but that stuff is just stylish. and i don't mind putting things together, so to get a discount because there's some assembly required, i really don't hate. a while back a did a post with an ikea desk styled two different ways, so i thought i'd repeat it with a nightstand.

using the rast table, which i love for it's simplicity, i came up with a his and hers nightstand that looks great for a single or shared bedroom. really guys, your nightstands don't have to completely match/be symmetrical. you can style them to fit your personalities and still make them look nice.

for her: drape a piece of lace over the corner to make it more feminine. 2 / a storage box for... well for whatever you want to store on your nightstand ;) 3/ a pretty dish to keep your everyday jewelry on top of a stack of your current magazines. 4/ the jonsbo lamp is so pretty and give off gorgeous light. 5/ this bright alarm clock to keep you on time. the same for him, but in gray

for him: 6/ the asele table lamp is masculine and has great color and texture. 7/ a leather tray to keep his phone and wallet at night. 8/ woven baskets for his storage

the classic red and white pole, outside of a barbershop, spinning round and round. in the states, you will often see them with a stripe of blue as well. these things are gems, a piece of nostalgia and can make awesome room decor.

funny how so many classics are the color red...

red lipstick is such a classic look. but women are often intimidated by the bold hue. the key to wearing a red lip is finding a shade perfect for your skin tone.

look at the inside of your wrist. if your skin appears more pink, you have have a cool undertone and should look for a cool toned red.

if your skin appears more yellow, you have a warm undertone and should look for a warm toned red.

if you don't see more pink than yellow, and vice versa, you have a neutral undertone which means you can wear true reds.

after the post a few days ago with the red art in the very neutral room, i decided to go searching for an example that really proved my point.

take a look at this first room. it's gorgeous and bold with it's red walls and white fixtrures. but the thing that really makes this room pop is the big chandelier.
now look at this room, with it's clean walls and floor. what catches the eye here? the use of color here is that makes this room dramatic and different.

think about the first room again. if we inverted the colors, meaning everywhere there is red would be white and everywhere there is white would be red, think of how much more bold this room would be.

i may still be stuck on valentines day, because i can't seem to stop searching for red and pink.

but y'all, i found a room today i'm dying over. and while it IS red and pink, it has even more than that  working for it.

number 1) SHINY RED PAINT
number 2) that pop of mint and green on top of the table
number 3) all that light shining through those white sheers
number 4) the woodgrain top with metal base. i'm just loving this table in this room
number 5) the wild pop of color and pattern on the chair seats

what's in my purse

a few days ago Blairita did a what's in my bag post that i loved, so i decided to copy! i've always watched "what's in my bag" videos from my favorite you tubers but i rarely see blog posts.

so let's do it!

1/ this is my work tote. working at a construction firm, it isn't really difficult for things to get dirty. so this almost-plasticy bag from Target is perfect to just wipe off.
2/ my keys, with a "love" keychain and a clip with my sorority name.
3/ yup, i'm carrying two wallets. the DKNY one (similar) actually has stuff in it. i picked the coral one up at Target because i love the color but i'm just not sure i'm ready to make the switch.
4/ a tape measure because i use them A LOT.
6/ too many lip products: eos lip balm, nivea lip butter, maybelline baby lips, revlon lipstick in nude attitude, essence lipgloss in rock star
7/ iphone and phone case
8/ sunnies (similar)
9/ glasses cleaner
10/ blogging & meal planning calendar (similar)

what do you carry in your purse? and do you think i should switch to the coral wallet for the spring?

valentine's questions

AHHHH! happy valentines day y'all! Ashlee from Growing Up A Thomas shared the cutest post today. it was kinda like the newlywed game, where both her and her husb answered the same questions about her. so i copied down the questions, wrote my answers, then passed them on to KJB for his answers.

How long have you been together?
C: it was seven years in  January
K: six years and eight months (later he realized he completely messed up the question - he took the time we dated plus the months we have been married. which doesn't come out right either :P )

Where was your first date?
C: to the movies on Thanksgiving
K: we watched Finding Nemo at your house

Where was your first kiss?
C: my house while watching Finding Nemo. super awkward because he text me about kissing me before he did it. ;)
K: your house

Who first said I love you?
C: he did, but after I made him
K: I did.

What were your wedding colors?
C: we didn't stick with specific colors, just kept it neutral with pastels
K: didn't have any

What is her most commonly used phrase?
C: i'm not sure and i have no idea what he will say
K: dang it

Who is her celebrity crush?
C: justin timberlake.
K: justin timberlake and donnie from New Kids on the Block

If she were ordering drinks for both of you what would you each get?
C: water with lemon for me, water no lemon for him. or a coke for him. or white wine for me.
K: wine for her and beer for me

What is the best meal she has ever cooked?
C: i would say stir fry but that's because it's my favorite. he might say meatloaf.
K: i don't know, there are too many. meatloaf is pretty good.

What is the most played song on her iPod?
C: *searches iTunes for most played song* tie between Sleazy by Ke$ha (what can i say? i'm classy) and I Won't Give Up by Jason Mraz.
K: an nsync song

What would she say is your most annoying habit?
C: farting
K: farting. or driving. (driving's not a habit KJB, but you are pretty bad at it)

What is the last thing she does before she goes to sleep?
C: plug up my phone
K: kisses me goodnight. or plays on her phone

If you could throw out one item of her clothing what would it be?

What would you say is your favorite thing about her?
C: he will probably say my personality. i would say my hair :)
K: her sweet words of encouragement

What is her go-to Starbucks drink?
C: grande non-fat chai
K: chai latte with no whipped cream? or something with no whipped cream.

What's her blogs name?
C: there's a good chance he won't know :)
K: splendid actually (without hesitation)

le sigh... pink and red. nothing says valentines day like pink and red.

but why is it we so rarely wear them together? red is a primary color and pink is just created by adding white. in fact, people very rarely wear two shades of the same color. but the combination of a great shade of pink and a true red? a true girly girl wouldn't even question it.

what do you think of wearing red and pink together? would you try to pull it off?

meet erik

we have a new guy living with us. his name is erik and he's handsome and rustic.

ok- cut the crap. i made an awesome bookshelf, if i do say so myself.

the backstory: we can't hang shelves on our walls in this stupid apartment and we didn't have a lot of floor space for another book case. i needed a way to hang shelves above our sofa, the only spare spot in the apartment.

with the help of Mackenzie, i bought a old door, some brackets, and a 2x12. i cut the board down to fit the door, attached the brackets and TADA! our new bookcase.

there in the middle? that's Fred. well his name isn't really Fred but that's what i call him. that's my grandpa and i needed to borrow some tools from him for this project so he came to help me. isn't that thoughtful?
don't you love how erik has evolved? i wanted to keep the shelves light but still stand out from the door so this pretty mint paint was perfect.
a little shabby chic and perfect for our home. i'm sure it will look different every other week as i load it down with more stuff.

ooooooooohhhh guys. have i got a room to show you. yes. yes, i do.

when a lot of people use red in their home they paint the wall their desired hue. but when red is used as an accent, that's when it can really pop and be appreciated. this orange-toned red is lookin mighty fine with all that white and wood.

boys, looking for a beautiful red flower to give your sweetie on thursday? while roses are nice, they are usually super expensive on valentines day. try a ranunculus instead. they are just as pretty and currently in season, which will also help your wallet.

really want to impress her? pair the blooms with a gold container like these fun honey jars and milk bottles. just spray them with some gold paint.

after all that talk yesterday about apples, i just kept searching the web for more apple info + images. it's like i was sucked into an apple hypno session or something. i just kept thinking about apples.

and it wasn't such a bad thing. because eventually i came across this ad from the early 20th century for Washington apples.

i kind of love it. the shiny realistic apples with a cheesy phrase? how could you not like it.

there's something about an apple that's so... Americana. right? i mean there's the phrase "as American as apple pie" and the legend of Johnny Appleseed. but what makes it stand out as American as can be is that true shade of red.

now, i know- there are tons of different shades of apples, and even green and yellow apples, but who likes those? when i think of an apple, i think of a shiny deep red with a stem and leaf.

to truly appreciate the characteristics each type of apple has, consider doing some reasearch before picking up a bushel at the market. some apples are good baking apples, some are good for eating. here a a few of my favorite apples, and how i like to use them.

365 02/07

yesterday i asked my husband what he thought of first when he thought of the color red. he said blood. i'm not sharing anything blood-related on this blog. i refuse. but i asked him because i know when i think of the color red, the first thing that comes to mind is an old country barn.

before real paint and wood sealers were sold and bought in stores, farmers had to make up their own concoction to protect their wood barns. linseed oil, from the flax seed, was used as the base of a sealer which was orange in color. added to that oil was milk, lime, and rust. the rust was used because it was easily found on a farm and prohibited the growth of fungus and moss. the rust would turn the already orange sealant, a red hue.

now i ask you, what is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the color red?
