S H I N Y happy

what is your favorite thing about christmas? and yes, i'm talking about christmas even though it's august. one of my favorite things about the joyful holiday (besides the fact it's Jesus's birthday, which alone makes it the awesomest day of the year) is how shiny it is. the lights, the glistening ornaments, the glittery bows... christmas is a time for metallics and i always take advantage of the holiday to go wear something i would always dress down throughout the rest of the year.

this year we are in luck. the metallic trend is starting this fall and i'm loving the fact i can rock my shiny gear without disapproving looks from the more conservative. some say a little metallic goes a long way but to be honest... i really don't see a problem with these pretties all together.

first I M P R E S S I O N S

an entry to your home gives an immediate impression of you, your style, and how you run your home. what does your entry say about you?

is your entrance a place for catching all those miscellaneous, items like mail, bags, sports gear? if so, keep it looking clean with shelving, baskets, hooks and the like that coordinates with the style of your home.

or is your entry more casual, just a pretty and inviting entrance into your home? just a couple hooks for guests jackets and a few decorative items and your set.

regardless of which entrance style you rock in your pad, don't pass up on an umbrella stand. for some reason, i'm in love with them.

dipped flatware - Love it or Leave it?

I first saw this trend on a wedding blog and I'll admit that I kind of fell in love with it. And now there are several variations...

what do you think of the dipped flatware trend? do you love it like i do? or would you leave it behind for a more traditional look?

21 dates of summer: mini golf

i don't know what life was like for you all but when i was in high school and started dating there was pretty much 2 dates we would go on: movies in the winter and mini golf in the summer. so KJB and i decided to remember those good ol' days and spend the evening playing mini golf. we have two specific rules: if it goes in the water on your first try, you get to try again with no penalty & if both agree the ball should have went in on the 10" putt but it didn't, you can count it anyway. i'm fond of our rules :)

nursery art

nursery art is by far one of my favorite things to look at. the rooms can be whimsical and fun and everything good in the world. some of my favorites i've found on etsy (duh-it's like the best place in the world).

use this as a guestbook at the baby shower and then art in the nursery. this shop has several options, but i love the circus monkey.
gaaaaawd, tell me that's not flippin adorable.
for my fellow chevron lovers. and completely love the 3d animals.
i'm a fan of this little guy. don't we all wanna be a cuddly, bamboo-eating panda?

21 dates of summer: market

we went to the market for the first time together! KJB had never been and i think he got a good impression. we walked out with ears of corn, peaches, nectarine, and honey to last a lifetime. it was a bit of a dreary morning so their weren't many people around but i kind of liked it that way :)

advice

it's Friday. let's get through this day together.

21 dates of summer: on the water

a super warm, just slightly overcast day... made better by the breeze off the water and each others company.

splendid conversation

a little thought to keep in mind this morning as i take brave steps into unknown territory. From 2 Timothy 1:7, God didn't give us a spirit that makes us weak and fearful. He gave us a spirit that gives us power and love; it helps us control ourselves.

Etsy Find - Industrial Rewind

i just realized that you can search local shops on etsy! you wouldn't imagine my excitement when i saw that easy little link at the side of the page. so i typed in my little bitty town (okay, we aren't really little bitty but not too far from it) and was amazed at the shops that showed up! yay for my kinda-little-bitty-but-not-too-little-bitty town! so i contacted a few sellers that i was impressed with and i can't wait to place a few orders :)

here are some favorites from an awesome shop called industrial rewind...

Dave and Jackie, the shop owners, create fun and interesting pieces from antiques and industrial pieces. Their lighting fixtures are my favorite from the shop including the above solar lights on the mason jars. Check out their shop here and don't hesitate to ask them about a custom order.

pattern accents

wallpaper and i have a deep relationship. i adore everything about it. i'd love to wallpaper an entire house but it really makes a statement when it's used sparingly.

wallpaper really is art in and of itself so treating it like that in a room makes a lot of sense. stretch it over a canvas or frame it inside an old window pane to make it a focal point in a room.

for a more subtle statement, wallpaper inside a bookcase makes for an interesting look and can really make the items on the shelf stand out.  to achieve an even more subtle (subtler???) look, go for a solid, textured wallpaper.

for secret pattern-lovers, a bold print wallpaper in a closet or cupboard can fulfill your pattern desires while keeping them contained and just for your heart happiness.

what is your favorite way to use wallpaper? do you like to go bold? or play it save?

dino day

this past weekend was my nephew Carter's 2nd birthday. Carter is in love with a few things including Thomas the Train, Elmo, anything with wheels, and... DINOSAURS. last year he had a Thomas theme so this year my sister went with dinosaurs and I think it came out really cute.

one tip when you're planning a birthday party and using a kids toys for decor... they WILL take them to play with them. the cake was made by a former neighbor inspired by one we saw on pinterest. we made and decorated the dinosaur nest cupcakes, the pom pom garlands, and flag banner. the dino claws were Bugles and the dino nest was filled with candy coated almonds. we also had party favors that i didn't get a photo of that included dinosaur tattoos, a mini bag of claws, dinosaur paddle balls and a few mini dinosaurs. we added the zigzag strip to the back of the party hats so the kids could be dinosaurs and made paper fans with dino silhouettes printed on them for the adults.
